Alright, folks, let’s talk about a show that completely caught me off guard. I’m talking about a drama that’s WAY better than its initial impression, and honestly, the ratings just don’t do it justice. Like, seriously, Viki, get your act together!
I’ve still got a few episodes left (they’re dropping soon!), so I’ll probably update this later, but I just HAD to gush about it now. I’m on a mission to convince everyone to give this gem a chance.
Okay, so it starts off… a little bonkers. Our heroine wakes up in some alternate Jianghu world, tortured and left for dead in the desert. Yeah, you read that right. Then BAM! Our hero rides in, saves the day like a total badass, and sweeps her off her feet. It’s all very over-the-top, with some questionable CGI and maybe not the best acting in those first few minutes. But trust me, stick with it!
Because after that crazy intro, the show just keeps getting better and better. Especially the leads, Yan Shao and Feng Yi/Rong Shu Kuang. Their story will totally steal your heart. I’m not usually a wuxia fan, I’ve tried, but they’ve never really clicked. But this? This is more like a fun “Love Game in Eastern Fantasy” kind of vibe. Super easy to get into, even if you’re not a wuxia pro.
It’s not dragging, there’s no endless palace drama or annoying misunderstandings. And thank goodness, the heroine isn’t some whiny, naive damsel in distress! There’s humor, mystery, a fantastic romance, and some seriously awesome fight scenes – like, the best I’ve seen in this genre.
What I love most is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It kinda pokes fun at itself and other shows like it, which is so refreshing. And even when it does those classic wuxia tropes, it does them well, or in a way that just works.
And can we talk about Gao Wei Guang as the hero? He’s PERFECT. I mean, they gave him a terrible haircut, but he just nails the role. He’s noble, funny, brave, everything you want in a hero. And Xuan Lu as the heroine? Amazing! She’s upbeat, smart, and totally takes charge. Their chemistry is off the charts. They rely on each other, tease each other, have fun, it’s just a really genuine and mature relationship.
The supporting characters are good too, except for those three “wandering masters.” They were a bit… meh. But the main villain, Shen Zui Tian, is fantastic. And the actor who plays him? Brilliant. (And he has great hair, which is just unfair.)
Yeah, there are a few plot holes, but they’re not deal-breakers. Honestly, this show is a hidden gem. It’s so much more than it seems at first glance. If you’re looking for a fun, engaging, and heartwarming drama, you NEED to watch this. You won’t regret it!
