Alright, let’s spill the tea on “Marry My Husband.” For the first 12 episodes, this drama had me absolutely entranced. Like, “don’t talk to me, I’m watching my revenge arc” kind of hooked. I was convinced it was going to be an S-tier K-drama for 2024. The satisfying revenge plot, the character growth, the tension – it was all there, baby! But then… Yura happened. And honestly? It was like a trainwreck in slow motion.
As someone who devoured the webtoon, I knew there would be some changes. But even with that knowledge, the drama’s detour into Yura-land felt like a massive betrayal. The webtoon version? Still the undisputed queen.
Let’s Applaud the Glory Days (Episodes 1-12)
Those first 12 episodes? Pure gold. The pacing was on point, keeping me glued to the screen. The plot tweaks actually worked, adding depth and intrigue. Ji-won’s (Park Min Young) character development was phenomenal, and the subplots were like little bursts of flavor that enhanced the main course.
And Then, Yura… (Cue Dramatic Sigh)
Yura. Oh, Yura, Yura. Where do I even begin? Her subplot single-handedly derailed the entire show for me. Every scene with her felt like a chore. I found myself skipping through most of them, desperate to get back to the actual good parts.
And it wasn’t just the character; it was the execution. I adore BoA as a singer, but her acting in this role was… underwhelming. Bland, emotionless, and just plain annoying. It felt like she wasn’t bringing anything to the table. Maybe, maybe, with a different actress, Yura’s subplot could have been bearable. But as it was, it was a total flop. Honestly, Su-min (Song Ha Yoon) was the only villain we needed.
Also, where did everyone else go? I was dying for more of Eun-ho and Hui-yeong’s love story, and the female manager’s post-divorce journey. Those subplots in the webtoon were pure gold, and they could have easily filled the time wasted on Yura.
Rewatch Value? Selective Rewinding.
Will I rewatch “Marry My Husband”? Absolutely! But only episodes 1-12, and then maybe skip to 15.5 and 16. That’s the only way to salvage the experience.
Overall Thoughts: A Near-Perfect Mess
Honestly, I wish they’d stuck closer to the webtoon. A 14-episode series without Yura would have been perfection. Instead, we got a 16-episode rollercoaster with a massive, Yura-shaped pothole in the middle.
That being said, the show did have me in a chokehold for two months. It was entertaining, the revenge plot was satisfying (especially in the beginning!), and the acting was mostly top-notch.
Speaking of acting, let’s talk about the villains. Su-min and Min-hwan (Lee Yi Kyung) were pure evil, and I loved to hate them. Song Ha Yoon, in particular, was a revelation. She played the “baby-faced bitch” to perfection, and I’m already looking forward to her next project.
Park Min Young was solid, as always, but Na In Woo stole the show for me. He managed to shine even with a relatively underdeveloped character, and his “green forest, puppy-coded” charisma was irresistible. And can we talk about how he was called “ugly” when the show started? Seriously, get your eyes checked!
The chemistry between Ji-won and Ji-hyuk (Na In Woo) was also fantastic, feeling natural and lived-in. The OST, however, wasn’t particularly memorable, except for Kim So Yeon’s “Wounds of Time.”
Final Verdict: A Fun, Flawed Ride.
If you’re looking for an entertaining revenge drama with some clownish comedy and villains you’ll love to hate, “Marry My Husband” is worth a watch. Just be prepared to fast-forward through Yura’s scenes. It’s a shame it couldn’t live up to its full potential, but it was still a fun, albeit frustrating, ride.
