Gemini is Google’s AI assistant, and the good news is you do not need to pay anything to start using it. If you have a Google account – which most Filipinos already do – you can access Gemini right now through your browser or phone. It works in the Philippines, it is available in English, and the free tier is genuinely useful for everyday tasks.
There is a paid tier called Google AI Pro (around $19.99 a month), but for most personal use, the free version is more than enough to get started. Here is what you need to know.
What you can do with Gemini for free.
The free Gemini plan gives you access to a very capable AI assistant without a credit card or subscription. You can use it to:
- Ask questions and get detailed answers on almost any topic
- Write and edit emails, essays, cover letters, or messages
- Summarise long documents or articles
- Translate text between languages, including Filipino
- Generate images (limited, but available on free)
- Brainstorm ideas for work, school, or personal projects
- Analyse photos or screenshots you upload
- Help you understand YouTube videos by sharing the link
The free tier has daily usage limits – Google does not publish an exact number of messages per day, but for normal personal use you are unlikely to hit a wall. If you do hit a limit, it resets the next day.
One thing worth knowing: on the free tier, Google may use your conversations to improve its models. If you are sharing anything sensitive, either upgrade to a paid plan or keep that in mind before typing it out.
How to get started with Gemini on your phone or browser.
- Go to gemini.google.com on your browser, or download the Gemini app from the Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS)
- Sign in with your Google account – the same one you use for Gmail or YouTube
- You will land directly in the chat interface. Type your first question or request and press Enter
- That is it. You are using Gemini
If you are on an Android phone, Gemini can also replace Google Assistant as your default voice assistant. You can activate it by long-pressing the home button, depending on your phone model.
A few things worth knowing before you dive in: Gemini works best when you are specific with what you ask. Instead of typing “write an email,” try “write a short professional email to my boss asking for Friday off.” The more detail you give, the better the result. You can also have a back-and-forth conversation – ask a follow-up, ask it to make something shorter, or ask it to redo something in a different tone. It remembers the context of your current session.
