Getting an SSS number used to mean taking half a day off work just to queue at a branch. That is no longer the case. The registration process is now fully online for first-time applicants, and it takes less than 30 minutes if you have your details ready.
There are two separate processes – make sure you are doing the right one.
Getting an SSS number and creating a My.SSS portal account are two different things, and they have to be done in order.
Process 1 – Getting your SS number is for people who have never been registered with SSS at all. This gives you your permanent 10-digit number, which you will carry for life.
Process 2 – Creating a My.SSS account is for people who already have an SS number and want to access the online portal to check contributions, apply for loans, and manage their records. You cannot do this until you have a posted contribution. If you already have an SS number and just need portal access, skip to Step 5.
How to get your SSS number online.
Step 1: Go to the SSS Member Portal. Open your browser and go to member.sss.gov.ph. Make sure the URL ends in .gov.ph – do not click links from Facebook groups or messenger threads claiming to be SSS.
Step 2: Click Not yet registered and fill out the form. You will be asked for your full name, date of birth, place of birth, mother maiden name, and a valid email address. Double-check that everything matches your PSA Birth Certificate exactly – even a missing middle initial can cause a rejection.
Step 3: Wait for the activation email. SSS will send a link to the email you registered. You have 5 days to click it, after which the link expires and you will need to start over. Check your spam folder if it does not arrive within a few minutes.
Step 4: Complete your profile and receive your SS number. Once you click the activation link, complete your registration – civil status, contact details, and employment information. After submission, your permanent SS number will be sent to your email. Save it somewhere safe.
Step 5: Activate your My.SSS portal account. Once you have at least one posted contribution, go back to member.sss.gov.ph and look for the My.SSS registration option. You will need one of the following to verify your identity: your UMID card PIN, your employer ID number, a contribution payment receipt number, or a mobile number previously registered at an SSS branch.
- Your SS number is permanent. You cannot have more than one – even if you change jobs, go abroad, or stop contributing for years. If you have lost your number, go to any SSS branch with your PSA Birth Certificate and ask them to retrieve your record. Do not register again.
- If you are employed, your HR department will typically handle the initial registration and remit your first contribution. Once that posts, you can activate your own portal access.
- If you are self-employed or freelancing, you will need to pay your first contribution before you can access the portal – through GCash, Maya, or an accredited Bayad Center.
The main thing that trips people up is expecting it to work instantly. Give it a day or two for the email and the number to come through.
