Seeing a doctor in the Philippines does not have to mean paying private hospital rates every time. There are several options that are significantly more affordable — some of them free — depending on where you live and what you need. Here is how to find a doctor without spending more than necessary.
Where to find low-cost medical consultations in the Philippines.
Use your PhilHealth coverage first. If you are an active PhilHealth member, outpatient consultations at accredited primary care benefit (PCB) clinics are free or heavily subsidized. The PhilHealth Primary Care Benefit covers two outpatient consultations per year at participating clinics, plus basic diagnostics and medicines. Look up accredited PCB providers at philhealth.gov.ph or call their hotline. This is the most underused PhilHealth benefit in the Philippines.
Go to a public health center or RHU. Every barangay has a health center, and every city or municipality has a Rural Health Unit (RHU). Consultations are free. Doctors and nurses are available for basic check-ups, maternal care, immunizations, and common illnesses. Medicines are limited but consultations cost nothing. For non-emergency concerns, this is often the most practical option.
Government hospitals charge much less than private ones. Philippine General Hospital, Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center, and regional public hospitals all offer consultations and procedures at sliding-scale fees based on your ability to pay. The Out-Patient Department (OPD) at a government hospital typically charges P100 to P200 for a consultation. Waiver forms are available for indigent patients who cannot pay even this amount.
Telemed apps offer affordable online consultations. KonsultaMD, HealthNow, and similar platforms offer consultations with licensed doctors via chat or video call, typically ranging from free (for Globe subscribers via KonsultaMD) to P100-P300 per session. This is practical for minor concerns, follow-ups, and getting a second opinion without commuting.
PhilHealth-accredited private clinics. Not all private clinics charge hospital rates. Many general practitioners in residential areas charge P300 to P600 per consultation. If the clinic is PhilHealth-accredited for outpatient benefits, your consultation may be partially or fully covered. Ask the clinic directly before assuming it is out of pocket.
A few things worth knowing:
- Bring your PhilHealth MDR (Member Data Record) and a valid ID whenever you seek consultation at an accredited clinic. Without these, you may not be able to use your coverage on the spot.
- For maintenance medicines, government pharmacies like Botika ng Bayan and Botika ng Barangay sell generic medicines at significantly lower prices than commercial drugstores.
- If you are unemployed or no longer employed, you can continue your PhilHealth coverage as a voluntary member for around P300 per month, which keeps your outpatient and inpatient benefits active.
