"An actress gets sucked into her own audition script and has to survive it β funnier and sharper than the premise suggests."
A transmigration CDrama that actually earns its comedy β and trusts its leads enough to let them run with it.
A Dream Within a Dream has a premise that sounds like it was designed to be chaotic: an 18th-tier actress doing a script read-through accidentally transmigrates into the body of the doomed heroine in that very script β the woman who is supposed to be used and discarded by the cold, ruthless male lead. Her immediate response is to run. The drama’s entire engine is built on the fact that the plot will not let her, and on how much fun Li Yitong and Liu Yuning have playing out that collision.
The Synopsis
Song Xiao Yu is a minor actress who has never gotten a lead role. During a script reading for a period drama, she finds herself transported into the body of the heroine Song Yi Meng β a woman whose fate in the story is to be destroyed by the male lead Nan Heng. Song Xiao Yu, who has read the script, knows exactly how bad this ends. She immediately begins plotting her escape. The plot, personified by Nan Heng himself, keeps finding her.
The Cast
Li Yitong (Song Yi Meng / Song Xiao Yu): The double identity is the whole game here, and Li Yitong plays it with a physical comedy timing that is rarer in CDrama than it should be. Song Xiao Yu knows she is in a script and uses that awareness constantly β she negotiates with the plot, argues with it, and occasionally panics in ways that are genuinely funny. Li Yitong makes all of it feel natural.
Liu Yuning (Nan Heng): He plays the cold, suspicious male lead with enough self-awareness that the character’s obliviousness to being manipulated reads as interesting rather than frustrating. The moment his certainty starts to soften is handled well β you believe the shift because you watched him earn it.
What Works
The satire of CDrama tropes is genuinely sharp. The drama knows exactly what it is doing when it has Song Xiao Yu recognize a cliche and try to sidestep it β and the comedy of the plot refusing to be sidestepped never gets old. The supporting cast has real energy, the romance develops at a pace that earns its payoff, and the chemistry between the leads is easy and warm in a way that carries the slower stretches.
Where It Could Be Tighter
Forty episodes is longer than this story strictly needs. The middle section has stretches where the same comedic note gets hit one time too many, and the dramatic stakes in the final arc could be sharper. But it never drags badly enough to make you want to stop β it just occasionally makes you wish it had been trimmed by five episodes.
Final Thoughts
A Dream Within a Dream is a genuinely fun CDrama with two leads who commit fully to what the story is asking of them. If you want something lighter, self-aware, and consistently entertaining, this is a reliable pick. Li Yitong especially is a delight from start to finish.
